Chapter 21: 21. Fight to the Death

The creature had witnessed the death of its pack members, and was clearly enraged, but it was still stalling for time. Harold was down, and Oscar was injured and Classless. The moment stretched, but whatever ability the Mosswolf alpha was using to recover finally came to an end.

It stood, hackles raised. Kalle was the only one able to stare it down. Luckily he didn’t just have his wand, but the dagger as well, although it was a pitiful weapon to contend with such a beast.

He hastily made the decision to bring the fight away from his vulnerable companions. He rushed toward the fire. Midway, barely able to muster the energy, he sent a final [Wailing Bolt] and crowded the creature.

It responded with unlimited aggression, but Kalle was ready for it to leap, he managed to dodge the rabid beast not once, but three times, and even landed a touch good enough to project a [Mind Blast]. It managed to stun the beast momentarily, but Kalle was beyond exhausted at this point.

He kept trying to circle, and almost managed another lap around the campfire. He saw Harold still down on the forest floor in his periphery and it made him fear the worst. Oscar ran to join the melee, sword at the ready. Kalle realised he had to make a stand. He pivoted and that was when the Mosswolf brought him down. Kalle's left hand delivered the dagger into the wolf’s eye. I did it.

But the wolf clearly had some level of pain resistance, and the dagger had gone downward towards its mouth, not the brain.

It had finally caught Kalle. The huge fangs bit down on the inside of Kalle’s elbow and it tore back and forth, right by the fire. He was in grave danger and deep pain, but still managed to focus on pulling his dagger out and driving it home one more time. The blade struck the beasts toughest bone, and the unexpected resistance made the dagger fly out of Kalle’s desperate hand.

He struck again with his fist attempting to deliver another [Mind Blast], but he was out of magic. The mosswolf was past being stunned in its enraged state, and its tearing back and forth finally dragged Kalle’s arm into the fire. He started screaming in a broken voice, whimpering and straining like a wild animal to get free.

Oscar finally reached the struggle and stuck his sword in the beast, but the blade got stuck too deep and he didn’t have the strength to pull it free. He ended up panicking and grabbed the biggest burning branch in the campfire, he attempted to beat the wolf off, but the strange glands on the beast's back was keeping it soaked in liquids. Nothing was working. Kalle’s screaming was reaching a fever pitch.

That was when a girl with a large hammer came seemingly out of nowhere, screaming something weird, before her strike ruptured the brain of the giant mosswolf and sent it teetering into the fire.

Kalle scrambled free of the pain and finally inhaled for the first time in what felt like minutes. Harold was lying passed out but Oscar was there to take a good look at the girl. No, it was a young woman. His expression was one of stunned disbelief.

When the threat was over the girl ran to the edge of the camp and vomited fiercely. Upon returning she had just a few words to say.

“Uh, hi. I’m Livia. Livia Beltaine. Uh, who is your leader?"
