Chapter 1: 001 Locksmith

The body was new, but the pain was ever so familiar.

"This is getting on my nerves," I muttered, looking at the wound on my chest in the mirror for the hundredth time.

It was like the left side was charred with flames, and had never been taken care of after that. It was rotting, dry flesh where I didn't feel much of anything. Sighing, I redirected my attention to the face.

The image reflected in the mirror was a handsome male in his late teenage years. Though the exterior held some resemblance to the original me, it was way more attractive, with hair as dark as the night and eyes as deep as the abyss.

I knew it was something to do with the magic of this world, but I looked like no less than an edge lord.

Other than the ridiculously handsome appearance, I was wearing fine silk clothing too, which was way extravagant for my taste.

'There was no helping it,' I muttered as a knit held my brows. I really transmigrated into Legends and Heroes.

And I'm an extra character who was supposed to die, yet here I was alive. No, I have no intention of becoming the protagonist. I would have been far happier if it was a simple extra with loads of money to waste.

However, I am now the heir to the Great house Locksmith.

I wondered why I felt nothing after waking up in this world? Yes, I had no relatives on the old earth other than that father of mine. Nothing but my work at the law firm. But I should have miss the old world, right? Yet all I felt was a calmness in the way that was not right.

Maybe I died, and this is afterlife. I shook my head at that thought.

It was only yesterday, and yet my old life already appeared like a distant dream. I did not know why, but since I woke up in this world, I felt like a different person. Not that different, it's the same me.

It was as if I was always from here, always living in this world. There was something else too, but it's better if I forgot it all.

Then a familiar transparent notification appeared before my eyes.

[5 minutes remaining for the completion of the synchronisation.]

It had been about half a dozen hours since I woke up in this world, and notifications like this came a few times already.  Looks like the system is synchronising with me, as I am not a real resident of the world.

I took care of my grief and sentiment about the past within that much time. Well, as much as I wanted to take care of them, I just delayed it for further notice.

Today was 12th January, of the year 1221, only a week before the start of the Academy and also the start of the story. Also, this world is identical to earth, but more like a mediaeval version of it with magic and sorcery.

Well, it was more of the Victorian age, however, it developed differently with the magic and threats.

By the way,  a big coalition of alliances ran this world. Supernatural powers, fiends, and monsters are the reason for it, as no nation single-handedly can take care of their threats. And there were other races than humans as well, like elves, dwarves, fairies, and others.

A gentle knocking sounded outside of the door. Clearly, the servant was trained enough to not bother me, even accidentally.

"What is it?" I asked in some language that I never learned, only knew it was called Duah. Apparently, I could converse well with anyone here, though the weird text still comes as unnerving. I reckon it will take me a couple of weeks to get used to it.

"Master Ian, the Lady will come to see you in a few minutes," the male servant, who was known as Kain, answered. "Please be prepared."

'Ian,' I said inwardly. 'Ian Locksmith.' The boy who died and resurrected again with a new soul in the body.

The Lady. I knew who Kain was talking about, but why had she come now? Shouldn't she be busy with all the things? It's most likely because I will leave in a couple of days. Well, Ian came back alive from where he was supposed to be dead. That was reasonable enough.

Like the servant said, after only a couple of minutes, the door of his room opened. The one who opened it was the servant, as he gestured with his hand for the Lady to come in.

"Give us some private space, Kain," the lady said as she came forward into the room. She was holding a sword in a sheath on her arm.

Kein bowed and left the room silently. Even the way he closed the door was with extreme gentleness, making no noise.

The Lady gave a proper look as if peering to find any change in me. After scrutinising with her eyes, she gave a satisfying nod. I passed.

This is Anneliese Locksmith. The Elder sister of mine now. Well, it was a lot more complicated if I had to think about the plot.

What was important was that Anneliese loves him like a brother. She went to great lengths to kill the person who was the reason Ian died in the original storyline.

The two siblings held little resemblance apart from being tall and ridiculously good-looking. Anneliese was a fine woman in her early twenties with a glamorous oval-shaped face. If only there was no vertical scar from her cheek all the way towards the forehead. Moreover, the sides of the scar were wrinkled like an old woman's.

Apart from that scar, she looked no less than an angel and far more attractive than my game CG. she was real, a human being.

Her hair was long and white—not pale white out of ageing, but natural white. Burning white is exactly the opposite of mine. Even her eyebrows and lashes have a tint of silver on them.

Her eyes were silvery too, with the pupil being the only dark spot in there. A similar white gown that matched her hair hugged her slender body. Even though the gown was plain, Anne looked nothing but stunning in them.

But I felt somewhat unnerved by her gaze. Was it because she was in the alliance's inquisition?

"Time passes so fast, doesn't it?" That was what the Lady of the house asked me in her first sentence.

"Yes, yesterday in misery," I could not help but sigh, "today free."

Anneliese blinked her eyes and shook her head, implying that I should not think about those days, though the things we were thinking were tragically different.

"Why are you silent?" Anneliese asked. "You will leave for the academy in a couple of days. We should talk more before both of us get busy."

"What is with the sword?" I complied, gesturing at the sword she brought in.

"You don't remember this?" the white-haired lady asked again, raising her white eyebrows. "Then again, I made sure to change everything about how it looks. Even a Defender of the Realm will not find anything amiss from the outside."

"Is it that sword?" I raised an eyebrow, realising a slow breath.

"Yes," she said, "the very one that almost caused your death. Bless the All-Mother's mercy, you made it."

"So, what do you want with it?"

"It pains me to give it to you, but you cannot live without it as well," Anne said as her eyelashes blinked. She entrusted the sword to my palm. "I wish you would never draw it again."

I nodded, though I was sure to check it out the moment she left the room. There was a temptation in the sword.

"I want you to never think of vengeance," Anne said, biting her lower lip, and for a moment, I wondered how someone like her would work with the inquisition. "Blood only draws more blood. Let's appreciate the peace we have."

I nodded again, and Anneliese did not believe me like she used to, but she appreciated that I did not scowl or burst at her.

"In the academy, you need to be careful." Anneliese continued. "We've lost our roof of security. Control your temper better and stride carefully. This is your last chance. I barely managed to get the consent of the president. Even though it was you who suffered the most, they are more lenient towards one mage candidate."

I smiled warily. It appeared she was sending me to the enemy's house. With the cities of sunshine and rainbows on the outside, there are deep, murderous schemes on the inside.

"Thank you, Anne," I said as she clasped my palm.

I had studied in college, and I can't say I hate it. Though there was not much liking either, but this academy will be entirely on another scale. Other than the studies of science, arts, and the welfare of people, it's a huge training facility for the division of supernatural individuals.

"Other than the sword, I brought you this," Anneliese said, drawing back her palms from mine and then inside her dress, she brought in a transparent crystal sphere.

I could make out it was a magical item, but not entirely sure what it was.

"I am leaving now," saying that the young lady of the house stood up. She gave me a little kiss on my forehead before leaving.

Anneliese left, and the synchronisation was about to end. I felt a rush of current in my head as the transparent notification appeared on my retina.

[Synchronisation: Completed.]

[1000 Evolution points are credited as a beginner bonus.]

[Preparing the Status window.]

The transparent text came on my retina one after another, then a larger window opened that was almost like the RPG game from the earth.
