Chapter 23: Book 1 – Chapter 23

“The annual Knight Academy Inter-Division Competition officially begins.” Koyuki -- who was the acting MC and referee for the competition -- declared into the microphone.

The audience let out a deafening cheer.

Hikaru and Torazou -- who still had a nervous expression -- stepped onto the arena.

As per the rules, the two of them were separated by 50 meters -- standing face to face, they confronted each other.

“I know thy name…Thy name is Baal-Zebub!” Hikaru began her Spell, her Magic Armour appearing.

“The old Canaanite god of the harvest is a powerful Spirit, Baal, who uses Magic related to the stars and weather -- particularly storms. Although his alias: Beelzebub, lord of the flies, is more well-known. By the way…never call him Beelzebub in Animus Mundus, or he will go berserk; even doing it in the real world is dangerous.” Kaguya whispered in Kazuki’s ear.

“Once, Hikaru could not resist and tried calling him by that name. That girl will occasionally be too innocent and pure…she was actually kept in Animus Mundus for thirty minutes as Baal-Zebub scolded her.

“...Let it start!” Koyuki shouted -- before blowing her whistle.

Torazou immediately rushed towards Hikaru -- however, he was concentrating on observing Hikaru, so his pace was considerably more cautious than usual.

In contrast, Hikaru swiftly completed her chant, her movements were quick and confident. A golden and ornate bow appeared in her right hand, lightning sparked from her left.

Hikaru pulled the bowstring with her left hand, the sparks turning into lightning and firing out towards her opponent.

However, Torazou timed his movements correctly, jumping to the side to avoid the lightning.

Hikaru’s expression became shocked.

“He also learned Kenshi-Ryuu?” Kaguya asked in a surprised voice.

“No, it’s impossible to learn the technique in only a few days. However, that attack is different to Barrett -- the requirement to pull the bowstring is an obvious action, so it is much easier for a less-experienced Knight to successful dodge.”

There was something strange about Torazou’s combat style, his sword was still sheathed -- though he held the sheathed weapon in his free hand.

Kazuki couldn’t figure out what he was waiting for.

Hikaru didn’t seem to notice or care about this weirdness and continued to fire two more arrows. Torazou used awkward actions to desperately avoid them and slowly approached Hikaru.

When Torazou finally reached Hikaru, some of the audience began cheering.

“However, one of the greatest strength of Lightning Arrow is that you can continue to chant other Spells while shooting!” Kaguya said with a smile.

“...Storm Fort!” Kikaru cast Defensive Magic.

Violent winds blew around Hikaru and her surroundings -- blowing Torazou into the air, treated like a sandbag in the endlessly howling wind.

“...If you are stuck in the air, there is no way for you to avoid it. Checkmate!” Hikaru said with a grin and aimed at Torazou, preparing to fire again.

However, Torazou didn’t show any signs of giving up; his gaze changed to that of a predator as his lips twitched and he drew his sword.

The lightning arrow was fired -- and Torazou threw his sword towards Hikaru…using it like a lightning rod.

Hitting the blade instead of Torazou, the metal turned into molten slag.

With an impressive movement, and some Psychokinetic Magic, Torazou landed beautifully and sprinted forwards while clenching his sheath.

Approaching Hikaru, he swung his sheath as though it was a sword.

The violent attack sent Hikaru flying  -- Torazou didn’t miss this opportunity, launching continuous attacks, he kept using his only remaining weapon, his sheath. The blue light of Hikaru’s Defensive Magic flashed over and over.

“Ride Lightning!” Ignoring the numerous blows, Hikaru completed another chant.

“Enough! This is unbearablee!” Hikaru shouted as lightning flowed along her limber.

Looking like fast-forwarding a movie, Hikaru’s actions greatly accelerated. Moving with abnormal reflexes, she finally managed to dodge the sheath and began her counter attack.

Her fists fell like rain onto Torazou’s body -- breaking his stance and forcing him to continuously step back. Hikaru immediately chased after him, continuing her relentless assault.

“Sending electric currents along the muscles and nerves greatly enhances speed and strength. It is a powerful Enhancement Magic that uses brute force when there is a critical need.” Kaguya began explaining.

The scene of a Summoner beating up a Knight in hand-to-hand caused some of the audience to cheer, and others to boo -- a mixed reaction.

“Stellar Restriction!”

Even while beating up her opponent, Hikaru continued to chant another Spell.

Numerous points of light appeared around Torazou. An instant later, lines of light flowed between the points, binding Torazou with what appeared to be luminescent strings. This Binding Magic was similar to the Magic that bound the Dragon during the entrance ceremony.

“W, What is this?”

Torazou shouted out as he struggled to escape the Binding, Hikaru’s fists hadn’t paused in their hits -- he had become a punching bag.

“...Doomhammer!” Hikaru completed a simple chant.

With a brilliant flash of light, a massive hammer -- crackling with lightning -- appeared in Hikaru’s hand.

“Try and dodge thiss!”

Hikaru swung the hammer down, but Torazou was no longer in his previous position -- Koyuki had rushed over and pushed him out of the way.

When the hammer only hit empty air, it disappeared.

Koyuki blew her whistle.

“Senior, what are you doing? Using such a high-level Magic on an opponent who’s Magic Power has almost been depleted would normally kill them…are you an idiot?”

“...Sorry. I lost myself for a bit--” Hikaru finally recovered and became dejected.

“Damn it. I didn’t have the time learn enough…I lost.” Torazou muttered with a disappointed expression.

“Winner: Magic Division Student Council Vice President, Hoshikaze Hikaru!” Koyuki said into the microphone.

Applause rang out -- most of it was for the effort of the loser.

Hikaru left, trudging with drooped shoulders, walking towards where the rest of the Magic Division was waiting for her.

“Next, it is your turn.”

With a nervous expression, Mio called out to Kazuki.

Nodding reassuringly to Mio, Kazuki faced the ring. Because this was a fight where he had to use Summoning Magic, there was no sword on his belt.
