Chapter 5: Chapter 5: Treasure Pavilion

The one who had knocked on Yuyue’s door was a mousey-looking girl.

Yuyue gave a polite bow to the girl. Although they were around the same age since she was a new disciple she had to show respect to all her elder disciples regardless of cultivation status and age.

The girl smiled she had a gentle expression, and there was a smattering of freckles on her face.

“My name is Shu Lin, I was told to bring you to the treasure pavilion, in the future you can call me ‘elder sister’ and feel free to ask me if you have any questions."

Yuyue felt herself being assuaged by the girl in front of her, she had a gentle way of speaking and seemed like a nice person to get close to.

“Thank you for your kindness elder sister,” Yuyue said bowing deeply.

The girl gave another smile as she saw the respect Yuyue gave her.

They quickly left the dorms and began to walk towards a large building that was further into the forest.

They eventually came up to a large eaved building, the building had multiple talismans strew about and had a foreboding aura.

They approach the building where the treasure keeper sat on the steps of the building.

“State your business,” He said gruffly.

“I’m here to bring a new disciple to get their treasure.” Shu Lin said while holding a small token.

The man nodded he took the token from Shu Lin’s hand and gestured for Yuyue to follow him.

Shu Lin nudged Yuyue and she followed the treasure keeper into the building.

“Don’t touch anything, unless I tell you” The man said,

Yuyue nodded and kept her arms close, she didn’t want to see what would happen if she accidentally touched the things in the pavilion.

They walked through several levels of the building slowly, in the few short glance that Yuyue saw, she was surprised by the items contained in the building.

There were assorted weapons, pills, bottles, and small jade slips strew about, seemingly haphazardly, the thing she saw the most was glowing rocks which she was unable to deduce their purpose.

Eventually, they settled on a level where the treasure keeper spoke.

“Pick one item from this level, when you are done speak to me.”

His tone lowered.

“You will only get this one chance and you are not allowed to return items, choose wisely.”

Yuyue began to walk around the floor, the items here were obviously of much lower quality than the items from the prior levels.

She saw several of the glowing rocks but decided to ignore them, if they were so plentiful then it was likely she could always get another once she reached a higher cultivation level.

She picked up a jade slip, she was not sure of their use, but there were also multiple of them in the room, she was unable to parse what the purpose of these slips was, so she chose to ignore them

She walked deeper into the floor. The treasures became even more mysterious and esoteric the deeper she went.

There were shattered pieces of armor, large dried leaves, and even musical instrument. She saw a scroll that had a painting on it that constantly switch between different images. It would go from a young boy, to a young man, to a middle-aged man, to an old man, before resetting.

Eventually, she was searching the shelves, and even looking under them.

While the underneath of the shelves was empty, she eventually came upon a large sword.

The sword was different from the other swords it had only one blade, making it a Dao instead of a Jian. The blade was unsharpened and dull like it hadn’t been honed in a while.

It was heavy as well, around 7 jin. The sword was dusty and emanated a menacing blood-filled aura. Still, Yuyue sensed some aspect of loneliness within the sword, one that felt familiar to Yuyue.

Yuyue took the sword in her hand, and she was instantly washed in a murderous aura like the sword was rejecting her.

She ignored the feeling and began to rub the sword, brushing off the dust with the cuff of her sleeve.

“Even if the world goes against you, I am not the type not to cast people off.” Her words were sincere, without a hint of falsehood in them. She thought back to Ji Ruo, and felt a pang in her heart.

The sword seemed to shudder at her words, the murderous aura then dissipated, leaving her alone with the sword. Although it did not seem content, it also did not reject her.

Taking the sword Yuyue felt quite satisfied with herself.

She walked back to the Treasure Keeper. A look of surprise flickered over his face as he saw the sword in her arms, she was holding it like a child, hugging it against herself.

“Is this your final choice?” He said.

Yuyue nodded and they began to leave the Treasure Pavilion.

While walking the man spoke to her.

“That sword has a mysterious origin, the sect found it in an abandoned immortal den. It has rejected everybody who has tried to pick it up, I never thought I would see a day where someone would take it.

They eventually walked to the end of the treasure pavilion where Shu Lin had been waiting. She also had an expression of surprise as she saw the sword in Yuyue’s arms.

Bowing, they bid farewell to the treasure keeper before walking back to the disciple dorms.
