Chapter 93: 94

Chapter 94 - Fortress City

The castle town that we started to build.

Once I was done with the construction of the buildings inside the outer walls, I decided to start on another task.

That was the renovation of the walls themselves.

When I built the castle in the north of the river, I also renovated the walls that I created with 【Wall Construction】.

The reason for this is that although the [Wall Construction] I developed could defend against a large boar that was charging forward, it was not suitable for defending against the attacks of an army of humans.

If the walls were merely thick, they would be breached in a flash during a siege.

Therefore, it was necessary to work on the wall.

If I had been able to do so, I would have wanted to replace all the outer walls with Hardened Brick walls.

However, the distance between the walls was too long.

At present, the walls that can be built with [Wall Construction] are made of regular bricks, and the only way to build them with Hardened Bricks is for me to do it without relying on the spell.

That was too inefficient, no matter how much I tried.

So I decided to keep my work to renovating the walls that were already there.

In the castle north of the river, we built towers taller than the walls at the four corners of the walls that surround the castle in a circular shape.

This was partly so that one could quickly spot enemies at a greater distance, and partly because I wanted to create entrances and exits from the towers onto the wall.

I decided to build the same tower here in Barca.

However, the castle north of the river was not that big, as it was originally built by reusing a camp where 100 people stayed.

Thanks to the moat on the ground, the defensive capabilities of the castle were adequate, but it was more like a fortress or a castle of departure for an army of a few hundred people.

If it was that big, the towers would only need to be built in the four corners.

However, the city of Barca is much larger than Kawakita castle.

There was no way I could build towers in only four corners.

So I decided to increase the number of towers on the outer wall, placing towers of the exact same structure at regular intervals, just like when I built the castle town.

Towers would be added to the wall every 200 meters or so, one after another.

I did this work by myself.

In the meantime, I asked other people who were free to do some work on the wall.

The upper part of the wall was flat, so I asked the workers to use the Hardened Bricks made by those with the Barca surname to build a wall that would shield people from archers and magic.

We've done this before in Kawakita, so I left it to Gran, nii-san, Vargas and the others without me having to take the lead.

By the way, if we were to have a defensive battle right now, the main weapon we would use would be to drop bricks from the top of the wall.

Of course, we could use attack magic such as [Shotgun] or [Ice Spear], but human mana is limited.

On the other hand, if you use bricks, you can make them and keep them in a safe place.

The bricks are supposed to be placed on the wall or in a room in the tower.

Of course, some people will use bows, but for now they will have to rely on the quantity of bricks.

Eventually, though, we'll have to add bows and other weapons so that we can have a decent defensive battle.

So, when I thought about this method of dropping bricks from the wall to damage the invading army, I made sure that Gran would build a proper barrier for it, and I also renovated the castle north of the river.

A wall designed to make it easier to pour bricks and bows down from the top of the castle walls, but harder for attacks from below to hit.

It looks like a bay window protruding slightly from the wall, leaving a gap for things to drop below.

While I was building the tower, the others were working on the upper part of this wall.

I drank a lot of Mana Recovery Medicine, and when my stomach was churning, Valkyrie would use [Mana Injection] on me to replenish my magic power, while I worked on the outer wall.

And so, when I finished building the tower that I was in charge of, I started building the outer moat this time.

At Kawakita Castle, a river flowed nearby, so we built a water ditch.

However, there was no river with that much water near Barca.

So, we had no choice but to make do with just an empty dugout.

In fact, I prefer digging in the water because it gives a better feeling, but it can't be helped.

We dug a 10-meter deep moat in the ground just outside the outer wall.

The width of the moat was wider than that of Kawakita's.

Then, bridges were built to connect the gates on the north, south, east and west sides of the outer wall.

Together with the woodcutters, we built and installed a drawbridge wide enough for a horse-drawn carriage to pass alongside.

Now, anyone who wants to enter the city will have to pass through this bridge, and in case of emergency, the bridge can be raised for a complete siege.

Even if the enemy attacked, if we gathered people who could use [Ice Spear] here and shot at the enemies, we would be able to get a good result.

In this way, a city surrounded by a deep moat and a wall with several 30-meter towers surrounding it was built in Barca.

After consultation with the others, this new fortified city was named Barcania and it became the center of the Barca Knight's Domain.

CadmarLegend Kawakita is now the official name for the castle on the north side of the river. And... the author's creativity... astounding... Barcania... but, I can't complain since I know naming things is very hard... and, whoa, the speed of development... one thing after another... dang... I guess this arc is the one with action. Very unlike the previous one where we only had new innovations and discoveries in each individual chaper.
