Chapter 11: It takes a wolf to catch a wolf

In the morning of the next day, Edward opened his eyes to the sight of Minx already licking his body. Lifting one of his hands, he patted her head.

“Good girl, you already know…”

But as he looked towards the lower part of his body, his words froze on the tip of his tongue.

[You’re definitely a grower, but I didn’t know my race was included in your type.]

“Shut up, it’s just morning wood. A normal reaction any human male body would have in the morning. It has nothing to do with Minx licking the blood from my body.”

[Hahaha] Fenrir continued laughing for a while at Edward’s expanse, until she noticed that Edward’s expression was growing greener by the moment, prompting her to finally stop.

After messing around for a bit more, Edward finally climbed on Minx’s back once more and started returning in the direction of the place he left his things at, relying mostly on Minx’s ability to see in the dark. After gathering everything from his hiding spot, he left Minx alone once more and started heading back towards the city gates.

“I really need to get a room at an inn. I can’t just keep hiding my stuff in the forest or someone will eventually stumble upon them and end up stealing them.”

After passing through the gates, as it was still dark outside and the registration hall was probably now opened yet, he decided to try his luck at finding an inn once again. After browsing the map for a few seconds, he picked three of them, the only ones marked as having a bath besides the Violet Flower, and went in the direction of the closest one.

<Brave Moon Inn.>

Edward looked at the plaque above the entrance and with a sigh stepped through it’s doors. Since it was still very early, there were no customers in the main hall.

Edward walked towards the old man napping on the counter and cleared his throat to grab his attention.

“We’re closed, go away.” Mumbled the old man, obviously still half asleep.

‘This old fart.’ Thought Edward as he lifted his hand and flicked the old man’s forehead. The old man got startled from suddenly getting woken up and quickly turned towards Edward.

“What did you do that for?”

Edward shrugged his shoulders and said: “I wanted to buy a room here but you were not waking up.”

The old man massaged his forehead at the place Edward hit him and said: “And couldn’t you wait a few more minutes? It’s not like you’re going to sleep now, it’s already almost dawn.”

“I still have stuff to do and don’t really have time to wait for you to wake up. Can I register for a room or not?”

“Fine, fine. Give me your adventurer badge.”

Edward was caught by surprise by the man asking for an adventurer badge and gave him a questioning look. The old man just pointed towards a plaque that was hanged by the side of the door on the inside.

<Only adventurers rank E or above allowed>

“Huh, why are you only allowing adventurers here? I’ll soon register with the magician hall, isn’t that enough?”

The old man snorted and said: “My inn, my rules. Come back when you’re at least a rank E adventurer if you want a room.”

Edward tried a couple more times to convince the old man, but having no success, he turned around and started walking back towards the exit of the inn.

“Magician guild looking to rent an inn. Does he think I was born yesterday?” mumbled the old man as he placed his head on the counter once more and went to sleep.

Edward almost stumbled and fell down the stairs of the inn as he heard the old man’s mumbling.

“I had a magician guild token, did he think I pulled that out of my ass?”

As he kept swearing, he made his way to the second inn. As he got closer and saw the impressive looking building, he forgot to continue swearing, but as he got to the door and saw the plaque by the side, his face froze.

<Keen Heart Inn>
<1 gold coin/night>

“More like greedy heart.” Mumbled Edward as he turned around and he didn’t ever bother going inside to haggle with the owner.

The last inn he arrived at looked quite decent, but there was a big plaque besides the door saying <Women Only>.

“What is wrong with this fucking city? If they have inns for adventurers, women and rich men, why don’t they have an inn with a bath for magicians as well?”

[Probably most magicians learn a few spells to clean themselves, so they have no need for a bath and even if they didn’t do that, most of them come from noble families as well.]

Edward sighed in defeat and took a sniff of one of his hands only for his face to grimace in disgust. His hand smelled like wolf morning mouth.

“I must either find an inn with a bath or some toothpaste for Minx….”

[You can always go back to the demi-human inn. After getting completely cleaned up by Minx, you probably don’t smell of blood anymore, even to their sensitive noses. Last time it was mostly your pants that smelled like that anyway.]

“You’re right… I can’t go the magician guild smelling like this or Circe will probably throw me out in an instant..”

Edward let out another sigh of defeat and started heading for the demi-human part of the residential area. After reaching in front of the inn, he hesitated for a second before walking inside. Surprisingly, there were still people drinking inside the main hall even at this early hour, but they ignored Edward completely this time.

The wolf girl behind the counter saw him as soon as he stepped inside and put on a bright smile as she waited for him to reach the counter. Once he was in front of the counter, her nose moved adorably up and down before the smile on her face became a bit awkward.

Edward ignored her changing expressions and said: “I didn’t manage to find another inn and I was hoping you will let me rent a room here and use the bath in the morning. I won’t be sleeping here, but I want a place I could let my stuff so I don’t have to carry them with me all the time.”

The girl nodded with a awkward but obviously still happy look before saying: “No problem. If you are short on coins and you don’t plan on sleeping here anyway, I can let you have a small room in the attic of the inn. No one usually rents that room since it’s quite small and has no window, so it’s quite cheap. What do you think?”

“It’s fine with me as long as it has a lock at the door.”

The girl nodded and said: “That won’t be a problem. It will be 50 coppers/night without food and 60 coppers if you want food as well. Food will be served two times / day, once in the morning once in the evening.”

Since food was the last thing Edward needed, he placed 10 silvers on the counter and said: “I want to rent it for 20 days without food. Do I need to pay to use the bath as well?”

The girl shook her head and said: “No, the bath really is free. If you give me a few moments, I need to go upstairs and clean the room since it for sure accumulated quite a lot of dust. You can take a bath in the meanwhile.”

Edward agreed and went in the back to wash up once more. After sniffing himself and not noticing any unusual smell, he changed into another tunic and walked out of the bath. The wolf girl also returned and was sitting behind the counter once more.

Seeing Edward walking out of the bath, she put a large iron key on the counter and said: “I already cleaned up the room. After climbing to the top floor, go straight and it’s the room at the end of the hall. You can’t miss it.”

“I wanted to ask, do you offer laundry services as well?”

“No, I’m sorry, but I’m the only employee here and don’t really have the time.”

Edward nodded, picked up the key and walked up the stairs. Once he reached the room, he stepped inside and saw that it was indeed a small simple room with only a small bed and not enough space to even place a table. Edward didn’t really care since he won’t probably spend a single night here. Placing all his stuff on the bed, he picked up the pass, the token, the book and a silver coin before walking outside and locking the door behind.”

Arriving back at the counter, he put the key on the counter and asked the girl: “Is it possible for me to let the key here while I’m out? I don’t want to lose it by accident.”

The girl took the key and placed it behind the counter once more before saying: “it’s no problem, a lot of customers choose to do that…. Sir, do you mind if I give you some advice?”

Edward got curious seeing the girl’s face turned slightly red after asking if she could give him some advice so he nodded out of curiosity.

“If you plan on walking through the demi-human area, make sure not to smell of wolf pheromones or some of the male wolf demi-humans might go into heat.”

Her advice made Edward’s face turn completely green. Just nodding once, he turned around mechanically and walked out of the inn. Even if he didn’t hear a single sound, he could already imagine that Fenrir must be laughing her ass off right now.

Since daylight was drawing closer, he decided to forget about the whole ordeal and started heading for the registration hall. Seeing that it was already open, he stepped inside and walked towards one of the counters. Since it was so early in the day, there was no queue to wait at, which worked in his favor.

<Guild Registration>

Seeing a customer approaching, the clerk behind the counter stretched and yawned once before saying.

“Good morning. Do you want to register to one of the guilds?”

Edward nodded before placing the token he received on the counter. The clerk took a look at the token and placed a tablet in front of Edward.

“You will need to register a class as well, but first I’ll register your guild. Please place a hand on the tablet.”

Edward did as he was told and a few lines of text appeared on the tablet. It was the same text that appeared when that guard checked him at the gate.

<Name: Edward Black>
<Race: Human,*****>
<Age: 18>
<Level 1>
<Class: N/A>
<Title: N/A>
<Guild: N/A>
<Affiliation: N/A>
<Achievements: N/A>
<Crimes: N/A>

The clerk typed on another tablet that looked like a keyboard on the other side of the desk and soon enough a change appeared on Edward’s tablet.

<Guild: N/A> ———> <Guild: Magician Guild;>

The clerk then passed him a badge with the mark of the magician guild and returned the token before saying: “It’s done. Now go and register your class at that counter over there. Anything else I can help you with?”

“No, thank you.” Replied Edward as he moved at the other counter.

The process was the same up until Edward placed his hands on the tablet and the clerk asked: “So, which class do you wish to change to?”

Edward decided to listen to Circe’s advice and said: “Water Mage”.

After the clerk typed the class on the keyboard, a few changes appeared on Edward’s tablet.

<Name: Edward Black>
<Race: Human,*****>
<Age: 18>
<Level 1>
<Class: Water Mage>
<Sub-class: N/A>
<Title: N/A>
<Guild: Magician Guild>
<Affiliation: N/A>
<Achievements: N/A>
<Crimes: N/A>

“Your class has been changed. For any more changes or it you wish to pick a sub-class as well, you must return here.”

“All right. Thank you.”

After he was done, he stood up and started walking outside the registration hall. They kept his token when he picked his class, so Edward figured that you probably needed one of those tokens to choose a class or sub-class and didn’t try to register as an air mage as well.

Since he was done with the registration and it was already dawn, he started heading towards the magician guild while hoping that Circe won’t get mad at him being a bit late.

As he reached the guild’s gate and saw the same two guards as last time, he let out a sigh and continued walking in the direction of the gate.

“Here we go again…”
