Chapter 5: C4: Level Up!

Dash!

The Forest Giant almost instantly noticed whoever it was that dared to attack it.

The sound it made when it tried to roar was very unpleasant as splinters inside its throat scratched and twisted against each other, emitting an eerie screeching and crackling sound.

A giant moss-covered tree trunk swung from above and swept the ground towards Jack's approaching figure. Not to be outdone by such a predictable move, Jack performed another skill.

Backstab!

With a 200% increased decaying movement speed, Jack's body swiftly avoided the incoming attack before she spun around the Forest Giant's hand and stabbed it, dealing -250 damage.

Forest Giants regenerated 3% of their max HP every 3 seconds, that was 18 HP every 3 seconds or 6 HP every second. Without the damage amplification, Jack wouldn't have dared to challenge the Forest Giant without sufficient preparations.

Jack avoided another attack from the Forest Giant and retreated a few meters behind an Ironwood tree.

Bang!

A dull thud came from the front of the Ironwood tree as a fist made of sticks and vines smashed into it. 3 consecutive stabs successfully landed on the Forest Giants' wrist, causing -220, -212, and -210 damage indicators to appear, whittling its HP down to a measly 308.

Just in time, the cooldown for Dash was up and Jack immediately used it with Backstab, repeating the same move she used to initiate the first attack.

From start to finish, not even a minute had passed yet Jack, who was only a Level 0, had already killed her first Level 5 Rare monster.

The once lively Forest Giant stumbled forward crashing into the Ironwood Tree it had punched earlier. Its charred bark fell off one by one as its body slowly began to merge with the tree.

A flash of light blinded her momentarily from the loot dropped at the base of the tree. Jack picked up 9 pieces of Hard Bark and a Bronze Ironwood Staff to which she clicked her tongue in annoyance.

The Ironwood Staff was useless to an assassin like her, but at least it can be sold for a sky-high price at this stage of the game.

[Ironwood Staff] (Common Rank)

Equipment Level 2

Requires Intelligence 15

Magic Damage +40

Mana +80

Durability 60/60

Additional Skill: Life Shield (Active) Cost: 30 MP. Casts a magical shield around the target (ally) that blocks 500 damage. Duration: 5 seconds. Cooldown: 2 minutes.

There were two ways to increase Skill Proficiency. The easiest way was to execute the Skill with Systems Assistance. Doing so would reduce the chance to increase SP points to as low as 10%. However, the chance will increase the higher the monster's level compared to the player's own, reaching a limit of 200%.

The other way was to use the Skill without the Systems Assistance. This was extremely hard to do, and only after practicing the Skill hundreds to even thousands of times could one activate a Skill on their own command. This was very important in the late stage of the game, and Jack who had inherited a decade of experience from Ciel could easily perform her initial 3 skills without guidance.

Jack took an obvious lead above the rest of the players from grinding experience with higher-leveled monsters.

In "Safe zones" like these areas, the spawn rate for Forest Giants was neither slow nor fast.

She put the matter of distributing attribute points aside and searched the area for materials and found Vitality Seeds that were used to brew health potions. She also found Soothing Plants that were used in potions that can decrease the casting time for spells.

Having harvested the nearest herbs, she ran along the lakeshore several hundred meters until she found another Forest Giant.

Dash!

Backstab!

Stab!

[You have killed a Level 5 Rare Forest Giant. Level difference of 3. EXP obtained increased by 300%. Obtained 187 EXP!]

In a few minutes, the second Forest Giant fell, awarding Jack with more experience points, 8x Hard Bark, and a few points of SP.

Jack continued farming EXP from Forest Giants until her sword's durability fell to 2 points. She had killed a total of 10 Forest Giants and was now level 4, already filling up half of her experience bar to the next level.

She casually placed all half of her attribute points into Agility bringing it up to 22, her Attack Speed changed to 2.2, and her Movement Speed to 11.

4 points were then allocated to Strength and Endurance, bringing them up to 14 and 11 respectively. Attack Damage increased to 28 and Armor Resistance went from 7 to 9.

Currently, with her skills, she didn't require any defense, and as an assassin, she also didn't need to worry about intelligence too much. She had enough mana to get her by for the moment.

The SP for Dash also reached 200 raising the skill to Level 2; the next level required 300 SP. The Skill's movement speed increased to 110% and the cooldown time was reduced to 7 seconds.

To average players, such a skill proficiency leveling speed would probably drive them mad. Even if all they did was run around, the SP only had a 10-20% chance to increase by 1 point. Some lucky players may have a higher chance than others and shorten the time needed to level up their SP this way, but it would still take several hours to days even.

Her level however was even more insane. It only took her a mere 10-15 minutes from start to finish and she was already level 4. It was worth knowing that the elite players, the best of the best, would at the very least take up to an hour to barely keep up with her pace.

Sitting down on the decaying tree log that was once a Forest Giant, Jack opened her inventory and planned her next immediate course of action.

Defense +4

Endurance +4

Durability 95/95

This equipment dropped from the sixth Forest Giant Jack killed, which she immediately put on, raising her Defense and Endurance Attributes.

"This should be enough bronze coins and materials to boost my strength."

A green rhombus-shaped crystal appeared in her hand.

Return Crystals, after being crushed, return the player to the nearest town central plaza within a 10-kilometer radius. There are 4 grades to Return Crystals; green, yellow, orange, and red. Red Return Crystals were the only ones that could be used during combat but were extremely rare to obtain, comparable to Mythical ranked items.

Before she left, Jack quietly watched the peaceful forest with a complicated look on her face. Such a place had long been destroyed by the Evil Forces and all that could be seen across the continent was a desolate wasteland. The last city didn't even have the time to care for a single tree, let alone a forest.

"Sigh. I have a lot of work to do."

Shatter!

Her body was suddenly enveloped in a green pillar of light before it vanished, taking Jack back to the Towns Central Plaza.
