Chapter 12: Questing and meeting the king

The five skill books that alastair found granted five points each in medicine , survival , knowledge , repair and crafting bringing them up to fifteen each and giving him just a little more prowess in those fields. to be honest alastair was a little worried about getting addicted to improving himself with the system since unlike working out where the gains only show up after a considerable time this upgrading happens near instantly feeling like a hit of pure euphoria. alastair decided to not use multiple skill books at once if the chance to ever happens again.

Something interesting to note however is that alastair could not use multiple copies of the same book like you could in fallout. alastair thinks that this is because this world is completely fine literature wise unlike in fallout were it is very rare to find an intact book. this difference didn't bother alastair since he didn't really think he would need to rely on books in order to get stronger since leveling up gave him not only skill points but also perks that if they work like in fallout will make him nigh unstoppable and maybe even immortal with some of the effects they had.

Moving past those thoughts alastair started to scope out the town for quest and soon found a total of three. the first quest was to rescue a cat stuck on a roof which was fairly easy since the cats paw was stuck in a small hole in the tiled roof after which alastair was rewarded with fifty exp from the system . the second quest was uncomfortable for alastair as he was asked to model for a tailor since he apparently had a perfect body for the tailors latest work. alastair obtained another fifty exp from the system as well as a fancy suit from the tailor for his trouble.

The final quest was both simple and headache inducing for alastair as it was a quest he got for simply being at the wrong place at the right time. apparently two famous master smiths who were each famous for an entirely different style of crafting than the other got into an argument about which was better and upon seeing that alastair appeared to be an adventurer was passing by grabbed him to settle the matter. alastair immediately knew that this was a bad situation for him as his speech skill was definitely not high enough to sway both of these people without offending either.

Stuck between a rock and a hard place alastair decided to wing it and asked what each of the styles specialized in. it turned out that they are polar opposites as one style was all about speed and finesse and the other was about strength and brute force. alastair decided to give his honest opinion that the better style was dependent on the situation such as were only brute strength worked or were only finesse and speed worked meaning that both were better at the same time neither. this surprisingly was a succeeded speech check as both craftsman paused to think about it and in the end agreed that what alastair said made sense ending the quest and earning alastair enough exp to level up and an iron sword made by both smiths one a shortsword and the other a claymore.

This level up to level six opened some more perks to alastair two of which made him almost salivate because of how good they were. the first was toughness that increased his skins natural durability by ten percent effectively turning his skin into an extra layer of armor. the second perk was fortune finder perk that had been changed to increase the rare drop rate of monsters he slew by a whopping ten percent which doesn't seem that much but considering that rare drops are a one in a hundred chance that extra ten percent chance massively helps.

Alastair was torn between the two perks but decided that the toughness perk would be a better choice and his next level up he would get fortune finder. as for his skill points alastair put them into his speech skill bringing it to twenty making him a good deal more persuasive as well as letting him resist attempts at coercion more easily. alastair left the two craftsmen and went to the inn as the sun was starting to set and he was a little tired so he decided he would head to the castle tomorrow.

The next morning alastair noticed that his skin was harder like worked leather proving that massive changes don't occur instantly but over a small amount of time none the less. leaving the inn alastair grabbed a fresh baked pastry for breakfast from the bakery before heading towards the largest building in the city that is obviously the royal palace that had a few small mansions in the small square as well as a few impressive and well maintained gardens. walking past the the square alastair approached the archway that led into the palace where he was stopped by the guards who asked his business and when he told them they laughed.

That was until he showed them the jewel his mom had given him and immediately the two guards got serious since they recognized the jewel and they asked him to wait here as one of them left to inform the king. after waiting for five minutes the guard returned and said that the king would see him now and apologized for the misunderstanding which confused alastair as he could have sworn that he detected some insincerity from the guard as well as hostility but decided it was his imagination before walking into the palace humbly.

The king was an old man with long white hair and a white spiked goatee who sat regally on his throne and he greeted alastair in a similar manner as alastair was expecting. but the entire situation flipped immediately after jasper was sent to cobblestone to "reward" them for raising alastair. hendrick called alastair the darkspawn and the knights surrounded him with spears pointed at his vitals before the king order him thrown in the dungeon to await execution for simply being born. and so alastair suddenly found himself trapped and waiting for death leading him to kick everything in his cell gaining the attention of the prisoner across the hall.
