Chapter 20: Chapter 19

Diarrhea fruit

This fruit that looks like a bunch of grapes fused together to become one thing and grown on the Diarrhea Tree is one of the most recommended and successful midwife methods to help with digestive problems, as the fruit causes exactly what the name suggests.

Sadly trying to grow the tree anywhere other than on the moon Luna has proven itself to be too expensive and time consuming.

Argul opened her eyes. It was still dark, but sunrise was just around the corner. She looked at Mia and moved a bit. “Good morning.” Argul whispered looking in her face. Mia looked back at her. There was still a hint of fear in her eyes and Argul could see the sadness of once again having lost her parents still being strong.

Mia hadn’t been teleported with her parents three years ago and had been taken in by a couple. That she missed them showed that they had been good people despite the situation being harsh.

The fear in Mia’s eyes got a bit stronger. “Are you going to disappear too?” She asked fearfully. Mia liked Argul and didn’t want to lose any more of her family. Argul looked at her, the smile on her face a little bit smaller, but still there. “Can you keep a secret?”, she asked. Mia looked a bit questioningly at Argul and nodded. The smile one Argul’s face got wide and very bright. “Well, it is very hard to get rid of me and killing this body isn’t enough.”, she whispered in Mia’s ears and then winked at her. Mia looked at her with round eyes and then hugged Argul really tight. It had been more than she had asked for. Argul had not only said that she would stay with Mia or rather Mia with her, she had given her a hint as to who or what she was. Mia made finding out who Argul was a goal for her at that moment and she would do it without getting help. She even got a quest for it so it had to be a worthy goal!

They cuddled for a while longer. Argul cleaned them both with her spell and they got up once the first light brightened the day. Mia tried to make her hair as presentable as possible without a comb and watched as Argul filled their wooden cups with water. When Mia saw Argul’s hair she set herself a new goal. She got up, walked behind Argul and made her hair, while Argul just sat there, a happy and content smile on her face.

She had totally forgotten the need to care for her long hair and to be honest she would likely fail doing so anyways. She had never been good at doing everyday things, much to the annoyance of her parents. When a ray of sunshine started to warm her Argul began to purr, it just felt really nice. Mia liked the sound of Argul’s purring. It always brought a smile to her face and was really calming. Mia wasn’t alone though, as a certain slime loved these vibrations. It could feel them with its whole body and it felt good.

Said slime woke up to its favorite sound and moved to occupy the second nicest place in existence it knew of, Argul’s lap.

The others slowly got up and Arthur climbed down from his watchpoint on a tree. They had a breakfast of berries together and then made themselves ready for another day of walking. Mia got to sit on Argul’s shoulders again, but this time Argul also carried Aina, much to the slime's relief and excitement as the first nicest place it knew of was Argul’s chest and when she hugged you there it was even better. Though Aina liked the place more without the fur.

The first part of the group talked a lot more today. They weren’t the ones who had lost someone and it distracted the other three of them. Harald knew a bit of woodworking and had managed to craft himself some crude tools to make most of their settlement. The others had given him a lot of freedom and respect because of that.

Argul meanwhile started to teach Mia sense mana between breaks of playing ‘I see something that you do not see’. Mia was only too happy learning about magic as she had seen Argul blasting the scary things to bits using it. She also liked the game. It was new for her and you could play it anywhere really, perfect to alleviate some boredom on a journey.

About two hours after they started walking Arthur, Alyra and Argul noticed a person watching them and then disappearing into the forest again. The man who had watched them was really good, but so was Arthur and he had already been mana integrated. Argul and Alyra’s senses were just better, being a higher level and having completed more quests. Alyra just always copied Argul’s stats for her avatar. She had a bit of freedom as the archive operator.

“At least now we will come announced.”, Arthur said and then looked at those that hadn’t sensed the scout, “We have just been spotted by a scout.”

Harald gripped the handle of his axe unconsciously and Tony asked troubledly, “Is that a good or a bad thing?”. He wasn’t ready for a fight and by no means good at it.

Arthur just shrugged, “If we are lucky then the leader of the town chose this universe. If not then we will have some annoying explaining to do and I would recommend not to enter the town to have more escape options. If we are unlucky then we will have a bunch of bastards coming for us. In either case we can’t fight them head on, so just be ready to do a lot of running away.”. That by no means made Tony more calm, but it had been the truth. Argul just shrugged and told Mia that nothing bad will happen. If she had to she would change her form and carry the others away, so she didn’t worry about anything.

Somebody knocked on Trevor’s door and he sighed annoyed. It was his break dammit! Why do things always seem to come up during his break time?

“What is it?!” He shouted. They had appeared as a random group around here three years ago and started to build this town. They had been lucky and found some iron in the hill near town, which had brought them back to the middle age. Then this message had appeared five days ago and he had to calm down a lot of people who wanted to know what the hell was going on. He wanted to know it himself dammit! He had not chosen to fight the universe, how would you even do that? Anyways, after the message they had lost to all their scouts in the east, who were observing the other settlements they had found. But the most infuriating thing was that Trevor still had no idea how he had ended up as the leader of the town!

“One of the new east scouts came back and said he has something important to report.”, the voice of his secretary answered. The man was really good at his job and basically Trevor’s second.

East though got Trevor’s attention and his annoyance disappeared as if never have been. “Bring the man to me!”, he shouted back and hoped the man really had something important to report. Trevor didn’t know why they always shouted at each other and never opened the door, but it somehow had become their way of short communication.

Five minutes later a really troubled looking slender man was brought into his office by his secretary. “So?”; Trevor looked at the man and didn’t bother with niceties. The man scratched his stubble and looked at Trevor, “Sir, there is a rather strange group of people approaching from the east.”

Trevor’s eye twitched. There had been happening a lot of strange things lately and he didn’t like the word anymore. He also didn’t like the guy in front of him who couldn’t just give his report. “Strange?”, he said sourly, “Would you care to elaborate?!”. It had been more a command than a question and the man understood.

He stood straighter than before. “Pardon Sir! There is a group of strange individuals heading straight for this town. They will arrive here late afternoon given their pace when I last saw them.

The group consists of two human men, one of them is rather young and likely a teenager. Then there was what you could describe as a purple haired elf with purple angel wings. At the back of the group was another woman. They were both extremely beautiful, especially the last one. Anyways, the woman had large silver fox ears and a long silver fox tail. She was playing with a little girl with furred legs and a large squirrel tail. And then there was the fox…” the man let the word sink in and looked really troubled. While the group was indeed strange, Trevor wanted to know the last part too. “The fox?”, he asked with a raised eyebrow. “Yes Sir, the fox. The group was accompanied by a two meter tall white and speaking fox.”, the man said in a voice that made clear that he wasn’t sure if he believed what he had seen, which had to be enough proof for Trevor for now. He looked at his secretary, who nodded and left the room. He would send out another scout to make sure the man had said the truth. Luckily Arthur would never get to know that he hadn’t been seen just because he was too small…

“Do you think they are dangerous?”, Trevor had to ask, he was responsible for about 5000 people. They had no idea about the true numbers and there never had been time to count. The scout looked him straight in the face, “Sir, I don’t know. They didn’t look like they had any harmful intentions towards us, but I’m sure that at least the fox and the fox-woman noticed me. While the fox-woman looks harmless she and the fox would definitely be dangerous to fight. The rest of the group not so much though. To be honest the small girl and the two men look more like refugees who had gotten to see a glimpse of hell.”

Trevor set down in thought and studied the man. If he had said the truth and the group came from the east, they might know more about the current situation. That they weren’t all humans was not a problem and had been easy for him to believe. They were in another universe, so what if there were other sapients.

Still they needed to know more about the east. None of the scouts he had sent there in the last four days had returned, so he had stopped sending new ones. He could view the group as a threat and eliminate them, but that would be the most stupid thing he could do. They only posed a small risk for now, a risk he was willing to take to get more knowledge.

He thanked and dismissed the scout and turned to his secretary who was just walking back into his office. “I want to be updated about the group, should the scout have told the truth. Have a force of 20 people ready to meet them once they reach the town and don’t let them in. I will meet them there and we will question them. We need to know more and this way it is the safest for us.” Trevor told his secretary, who acknowledged the command and got to work. Trevor had his own work to do now that his not break had ended.

A few hours after the first scout had appeared, they noticed the second one. From then on they were constantly being watched and Alyra and Arthur made sure the scouts knew that they knew that they were being watched.

The others had quieted down with the second scout, not wanting to give away any information in case of a not so friendly confrontation. Argul didn’t care much and continued playing happily with Aina and Mia. Only when she tried teaching Mia sense mana Argul got a lot more careful and only whispered those explanations to Mia. To the scouts it alway looked like she tried to calm Mia down from something.

Mia could already sense mana, but had not understood everything Arul had explained and Argul had made a challenge out of it. She would come up with the funniest comparisons while trying to find a way to explain things in easier terms. She had had some success already and Mia had fun, so they were both rather happy.

Once they reached the edge of the deforested zone around the town they could see a group of about 20 battle ready people waiting for them, but they didn’t immediately attack so the group relaxed a bit.

The town was rather well planned and built next to a river. There were some fields of plants around said river. The other noticeable parts were a slightly bigger building in the center and what looked like a quarry at the hill. There had to be a smithy somewhere as people carried metal tools and weapons with them. Still they seemed to have lost everything concerning technology that came after the middle ages.

One man of the group opposite to them walked in their direction and stopped about halfway between the two groups. He likely wanted to talk. Their group had stopped at the edge of the deforested part. After a short discussion, that was more Alyra telling the others to shut up, Alyra went to meet the guy. She was smart and the most imposing of them, so whatever she had planned would likely succeed. They could only hope.
